History of CBC

What Kind of Church is CBC? | CBC Leadership | Ministry Philosophy

In the 1960s, eleven families who had moved to northern Westchester from Yonkers and White Plains, began to meet together in local homes. They talked and prayed about starting a new gathering of Christians in northern Westchester. In 1970 the name "Community Bible Church of Northern Westchester" was legally established and elders were recognized by the new congregation.

These eleven families came from the faith tradition of the open Brethren assemblies with a strong emphasis on the ministry of all believers. [More about CBC's Philosophy of Ministry]

Since its beginning, Community Bible Church of Northern Westchester has been an independent and non-denominational congregation committed to networking and serving with Christians across denominational lines and in ministries locally and worldwide.

One of the missionary couples supported by the church, David and Martha Dunkerton, served in Kenya for 19 years.

In 1992, David Dunkerton began full-time service at Community Bible Church as its first pastor. In this local church the pastor is one of the elders. He does not have authority over them, nor does he work for them as an employee. He is distinct in that he serves as an elder in a full-time capacity. [More about CBC's Leadership]

History of Our Building
Our building was formerly the Kitchawan Tavern located a half mile west on the Taconic Parkway. It was built in 1923 and moved to its present location in 1967 when the parkway was widened. The new owner added living quarters to the building to be used as his home but decided against living in it. One of the original members of our church was driving past the building and happened to meet the owner who agreed to sell it. In the fall of 1970, the property was jointly purchased by eleven families who began Community Bible Church of Northern Westchester.

During the late 70s and early 80s, the roof was raised to add the large meeting room upstairs and then an additional wing was added to provide three floors of classrooms.

Our present main room downstairs was the dining room of the Kitchawan Tavern. [postcard view]. Our lounge was a gas station. The kitchen of the restaurant was the room behind the fireplace, now used as our young people's room.

God's provision
For more than thirty-five years, God has generously and faithfully provided for the spiritual and material needs of this local congregation. We have seen God at work in our growth as a church community and in the lives of families and individuals who have shared their faith journey with us over the years.

We minister as a church community in the northern suburbs of New York City. This is an area where families and individuals face constant challenges with commuting schedules, career transitions, raising children in a diverse culture, taking care of older relatives, and a high cost of living.

In an increasingly mobile and diverse society where a sense of place and belonging is more needed than ever before, we remain committed to our desire to be a vibrant and caring community where people can encounter God and find nurture for a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

People have come into our church community from many different backgrounds -- including Catholic, Jewish, agnostic and atheist -- to travel with us in their journey of faith.

We invite you to travel with us.
Come and see Jesus with us.
